Honest tradeoffs
What Verkio is. And what it isn't.
There are work suites we'll never be. There are some we're trying to be. This page is the both-sides version — the things to know before deciding Verkio is right for you.
What Verkio is
Things we commit to.
An EU-resident work suite.
Mail, calendar, contacts, files, wikis, and messaging — all on EU-resident infrastructure in Germany and Finland. EU-managed encryption keys, EU DNS, EU payments. No US hyperscaler in the chain.
Built on open standards.
IMAP, SMTP, JMAP, CalDAV, CardDAV, Sieve, vCard, iCalendar, Markdown. Use Thunderbird, Apple Mail, K-9, DAVx⁵, or our webmail — we don't lock you into one client.
For people who want the basics done well.
No AI features that read your mail, no engagement metrics, no 'you might be interested in' upsell. The product is the mailbox, not your attention.
A small EU company.
Verkio AB, registered in Sweden. Owned by the founder, not a venture portfolio. No 'we got acquired' email is coming.
A real platform.
Public REST API with OpenAPI 3.1, signed webhooks, JMAP passthrough, scoped tokens. Sign in with Verkio (OIDC) is coming if developers want it.
Audit-log-native.
Every admin action recorded with before/after values, seven-year retention by default. Stream to your SIEM. No 'we'll look into the logs' — they're yours to query directly.
What Verkio isn't
Things we deliberately don't try to be.
An end-to-end encrypted mail service like Proton or Tuta.
Default at-rest encryption uses Verkio-managed keys held in the EU — strong, but Verkio can technically read your mail. Opt-in customer-held-key encryption ships June 2026 but trades the web inbox, full-text search, and push previews. If true E2EE for every message is your hard requirement, those products fit better.
A 50-app bundle like Zoho or Workspace.
Six suite surfaces plus the platform layer. We're not adding a CRM, an LMS, a video meeting product, or an HR module. Those are solved problems in tools you can integrate via our API.
A free service.
No ad-supported tier. You pay for the suite; we don't sell summaries of your mail to a model vendor. If you're not paying, we're not the right home for your mailbox.
A US-headquartered company.
Sweden-based, outside US CLOUD Act jurisdiction. This is the whole point. If your buying criteria favour a US vendor, we're the wrong shape.
A messaging-first platform like Slack.
Messaging is part of the suite, not the centrepiece. We're not building reactions, custom emoji, or notification-anxiety features. If team chat is your primary tool, a dedicated product will out-feature us for years.
A 'no Microsoft / no Google' zealot.
Use Gmail or Outlook if they work for you. We just think you should have an EU-resident, standards-based option when they don't.
A four-week-launch company.
We're slow. Three-year roadmap, not three-month. We'd rather ship one feature properly than five half-done. If you need a vendor moving at startup speed, that's not us.
Is it a fit?
Probably, if you want most of those.
Read the lists. If most of the 'is' items feel right and most of the 'isn't' items are things you don't need, Verkio is probably a good fit. If a single 'isn't' item is a hard no, save us both the time.
